OFF THE GRID DOCUMENTARY PROJECT

I read Nick Rosen's book "Off The Grid" and I ran across this Kickstart Propsal to make a documentary.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

I am undertaking this series - which will be twelve episodes of 6-8 minutes - not as a piece of entertainment but as a user's guide.  If the funding exceeds our target then the films will be longer or there will be more of them.

It covers the how-to, but also the why-to. Learn how off-grid residents set up their energy supply, water treatment, and waste management. And enjoy the deeper and more interesting issues of why people choose to live this way and what motivates them.

The tips and tricks you will learn through the series can benefit anyone who already lives off-grid or who wants to step away from the grid, whether for a weekend or a year or the rest of your life.

The series covers all the practical issues and brings you inspiring stories from ordinary people - men and women who woke up one morning and decided that going off the grid was the right thing for them and their families. Some have skills, like bushcraft or carpentry. Others just learn as they go. Some are acting out of concern for the environment. Others just want the freedom that comes from a low-cost or no-cost existence.

Most off-gridders live as comfortably as the rest of society, at a fraction of the cost. For many it is about combining ancient wisdom with the latest technology. Using new media and new mobile gadgets is a key part of the lifestyle.

But there are legal problems, technical problems, and financial issues, not to mention physical discomfort. All these obstacles will be confronted and settled by the series.

What We Need & What You Get

We lunched this project on Kickstarter to bring it direct to you, the people!
We are extremely grateful for any donations, no matter how big or small they are. $1 or $1000, every dolar pledged will make a difference to this project.
We need the money to get the job done!!! - In return for you support, you get: a copy of the film for a relatively low donation, or, for a little more, a copy of my book and one of the first DVDs off the press with exclusive extras. Larger donors will spend time talking to me about their own take on off-grid living, or even be offered a guided tour of off-grid places in their own area.

Why We Need Your Support?

"$40,000 is a lot of money - what is it for?" says one message we received.
Good question.
Every penny will be spent on the production and distribution of the series. Off-grid locations tend to be fairly remote and time-consuming to visit. Travel costs, equipment hire, payment and hotels for the camera operators, car-hire and phone calls. It all adds up.
Assuming 2 days filming per episode, plus a day or two getting there - it adds up to 40-50 days of camera time, another 40 days of travel and accommodation for me (I am the producer and presenter).
Then comes editing - About 6 weeks work for a paid editor, the good ones are expensive.
Finally, publicity - no point going to all this effort and failing to tell everyone about it.
Not a penny of the money raised will go into my pocket.
We will be filming in the USA, Canada, UK, Spain and elsewhere.
Budget permitting we also plan to make a 70 minute Feature Documentary from the same footage, to be shown in cinemas in America and Europe.
