Time Spec: A Primer on Military Watches from Worn & Wound

In my everquest search on Mil-Spec watches:

Excerpt from Worn & Wound:
"From the beginning of its existence, the watch has been an information tool, giving its wearer some piece of intelligence that he wouldn’t have on his own. Perhaps nowhere is that truer or better realized than in the military watch.
Almost as long as watches have existed, governments and militaries have been buying and issuing timepieces to be used in nearly every military scenario imaginable. Strictly utilitarian, these watches have served as functional instruments, designed to give their wearers specific and accurate information in environments not often encountered by civilian watches."

OK, that should be enough to get you interested and popping on over to their page and read the whole story! Click the link onward!  http://wornandwound.com/2013/09/10/a-primer-on-mil-spec-watches/

NORRA Announces Official Dates for 2014 General Tire NORRA Mexican 1000 Rally

NORRA Announces Official Dates for 2014 General Tire NORRA Mexican 1000 Rally
-- Ensenada to Host Vintage-Flavored Event for First Time --
-- New Format Offers Enhanced Safety and Hospitality --
-- Rally Registration to Open New Year's Day --

This year's General Tire NORRA Mexican 1000 will separate the very popular motorcycle categories and the four-wheel vehicles for two days of the rally, and offer a three hour head start on Day 3 and Day 4 to enhance participant safety.

(Agua Dulce, Calif.,) With the automotive and motorsports worlds now preparing for the all-important Fall show season and final planning for next year, the National Off-Road Racing Association (NORRA) today announced a new date and some major changes to its marque event – the 2014 General Tire NORRA Mexican1000 rally.

Working in association with local and state Mexican officials, the fifth annual competition, known as the “Happiest Race on Earth,” is now scheduled to take place two weeks later than in previous years, beginning on Saturday, May 10th and ending on Wednesday, May 14th. In addition, for the first time in its recent history, NORRA will begin its four-day event in the historic town of Ensenada, Baja, Mexico while finishing in the Mexican 1000’s popular seaside destination resort city of San Jose Del Cabo at Baja’s land’s end.

ABOUT NORRA
Beginning in 2010, the National Off Road Racing Association (NORRA) began promoting a rebirth of the NORRA Mexican 1000 rally. Dubbed the “Happiest Race on Earth,” the unique off-road rally was co-created by promoter Mike Pearlman to consist of special stages (unlimited speed timed stages in the dirt) linked together by controlled speed liaison / transit sections (highway). The one-of-a-kind, once-a-year, four-day rally includes vintage off-road vehicles and motorcycles, rally cars, a limited group of modern desert racecars and classes for prerunner trucks and buggies. Pearlman’s late father Ed and others established the first running of the NORRA Mexican 1000 off-road rally in November of 1967, which eventually became internationally recognized and evolved into the Baja 1000 in the mid-1970s. In 2013 NORRA added a second event to its calendar -- the new NORRA Mexican 500.

The General Tire NORRA Mexican 1000 is supported by General Tire, American Racing Wheel, South Point Hotel Casino, Walker Evans Racing, Azunia Tequila, KC HiLites, Bilstein Shock Absorbers and Mastercraft/Impact Safety.

The Amen break - video explains the world's most important 6-sec drum loop

The Amen break is a 6 second (4 bar) drum solo performed in 1969 by Gregory Cylvester "G. C." Coleman in the song "Amen, Brother" performed by the 1960s funk and soul outfit The Winstons. The full song is an up-tempo instrumental rendition of Jester Hairston's "Amen," which he wrote for the Sidney Poitier film Lilies of the Field (1963) and which was subsequently popularized by The Impressions in 1964. The Winstons' version was released as a B-side of the 45 RPM 7-inch vinyl single "Color Him Father" in 1969 on Metromedia (MMS-117), and is currently available on several compilations and on a 12-inch vinyl re-release together with other songs by The Winstons.
It gained fame from the 1980s onwards when four bars (6 seconds) sampled from the drum-solo (or imitations thereof) became very widely used as sampled drum loops in breakbeat, hip hop, breakbeat hardcore, hardcore techno and breakcore, jungle and drum and bass (including oldschool jungle and ragga jungle), and digital hardcore music.[1] The Amen Break was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music—"a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures." It is arguably the most sampled drum beat of all time and unarguably one of the most sampled loops in contemporary electronic music.

Story by Tim Conners @ Action Hub:
There aren’t many things better than greeting a cool, crisp morning with the steamy aroma of freshly brewed java. Or how about kicking back with a nice cup of joe after a long day on the trails? Don’t even get me started on just how essential the stuff is when the weather turns foul.

Classic Kit! Eagle Industries Covered watch band & Marathon Navigator MIL-Spec watch

Classic Kit!
Eagle Industries Covered watch band & Marathon Navigator MIL-PRF-46374G Type III, Class 1 watch.

I totally dig the covered watch band! The bummer is that is seems Eagle Industries is no longer making the covered watch band. But while searching them out discovered that they have some awesome equipment! Eagle Industries is a world leader in the production of premium equipment products for the military, homeland security, and law enforcement agencies. Producing more than 5,000 items including tactical vests, holsters, insertion extraction harnesses, gear bags, packs, weapon cases, miscellaneous pouches, and weapon slings for military and law enforcement personnel, Eagle has emerged as one of the most trusted names in tactical nylon gear. In 2009, Eagle became a wholly owned subsidiary of Alliant Techsystems, Inc. (ATK). http://www.eagleindustries.com

Marathon watches are the real deal! I originally learned about Marathon watches from CountyComm:

I came across the watch band via MWR forum:

Looking for something exotic / overland safari adventurous style  this holiday for your wifey?!

Loretta Lam and Ronna Sarvas Weltman For inspiration, we chose the taijitu - the Taoist symbol of yin yang, representing interconnectedness and interdependence in nature. For years we have been collaborating, encouraging, supporting, critiquing and watching over each other's artistic development. So it seemed natural to create necklaces which reflect our individual style while paying homage to each others journey, balancing an exploration of the sleek and controlled with the fresh and loose. Each is a nod to the other, enhanced and informed by their relation to the other and the whole.

Field Watch Research: BERTUCCI - SWISS MILITARY CALIBRE

I have had a keen interest in field watches mil-spec heritage for some time now and just doing research on both the style of what I like and the functionality of the watches I am looking at. The internet is a wealth of knowledge, data and history along with consumer opinions.

While the Bertucci brand may not have actual mil-spec heritage, they do have the look and also seemed to be backed by actual durability that one would expect from a "field watch."

Usually when I find a watch and or any product of interest, I usually go straight to the companies history or about page to see what type of game or claim they are making. Its all about the about!

When I read the Bertucci story, they are talking to me and about me! I am the "every man!" I'm not a baller looking to speed a ton of money on a Panerai / Rolex / Omega / Tag Heuer. I would have if I could have, but at this stage in my life, its not in the cards. Honestly I have been a diehard Swatch fan since 1983!

So, what was so captivating from Bertucci's about page?
"It's all about building a better watch... and it's all about our promise of performance to you."
They said "promise" IN PRINT! That is a HEAVY WORD in this day and age!

"If you were to own only one watch... it would be a watch well suited for life's endeavors. It would need to possess the qualities of durability, singularity of purpose, and versatility. In essence, equally rugged and refined, with a classic, understated, and enduring style."
They are really winning me over with some text in digital pixel form! The electricity could go off, and these words and statements would be gone... but for the moment, they have my attention.

"Original... Our Passion It's in our blood and it's in our brand. Bertucci™ Field Watches is a 10 years old, independent start up, stand alone U.S. Company. We are the market leader in titanium field watches..."
OK, They are a US Company - winning!
Titanium - winning!
Focused out outdoor activities and field watches - winning!!!

Give them a look and start at the about page:
http://www.bertucciwatches.com/Bertucci/ourstory.html

Also, this is where I discovered them again from:

10 Popular California Beach Campgrounds - Things to See and Do - Park Ranger's Blog

Dana Point has this campground that is pretty nice considering the fact this is prime Southern Location property. It is located within the Doheny State Beach located to probably the best place to learn to long board surf spots as well. Doheny is the original spot where Cars & Coffee use to be until it outgrew the space there. Doheny State Beach is two parks in one with camping in the southern area (with some campsites only steps away from the beach) and day use in the northern area, where there is a five-acre lawn with picnic facilities and volleyball courts. Surfing is popular, but is restricted to the north end of the beach. Surf fishing is also popular.

183 Pound Honda XR200 - The perfect Lightweight Woods & Tight Trail Motorcycle?

While on my little search on lightweight trail & woods bikes, I came across this thread by "Woodsryder" on ThumperTalk call 183lb. XR200

"I'm old and skinnny with two bad wrists so I needed to build an ultralight playbike. My regular ride is an XR650R/CRF450 hybrid that weighs 275 lbs. Big fun but too much heft for a 55 year old 155lb aging adolescent with bad wrists."

Honda XR200 Weight Reduction - ThumperTalk

As I am approaching 50, three years away... projects, no matter the age, take a while to develop. I currently ride a ATK605DS & Honda XR400 but there have been many times were I wished I had a smaller dual sport bike. While spelunking around on ThumperTalk, I have discovered this thread by "Chuck4788" titled: Honda XR200 Weight Reduction.

"Several members have posted their conversion projects on this forum; the most popular seem to involve stuffing an XR200 motor into a MX chassis.  I have one of those in my garage and while it is a good bike I thought I could make some improvements in my search for a more “perfect” bike for the type of trail riding I currently ride.  A long time riding buddy and I have been fussin with riding dirt bikes since the mid sixties and thru the years our riding and priorities have evolved, and the bikes have ranged from open class MX bikes used in the desert to Trials bikes.  Also during this time we have had a variety of XRs in our stables and the power delivery of the XR200 engine seems to suit the type of trail riding we currently like to do.  During this past year we have been attempting to define an ideal bike for our use on technical trails in the PNW, we started by riding different types of bikes in side by side comparisons, and evaluating the results to find what we thought suited our riding style and terrain.  I tend to focus on improving suspension and he focuses on light weight, as a result we have some lively discussions, and different bikes.  At this point I’m just a recreational rider that likes single track along with some tight technical stuff, plus mountain trails with switchbacks and stair steps.  My friend has a really cool Montessa Trials bike (Honda owns Montessa and this bike has a Honda 250 EFI Unicam engine); while it has one of the best engines for trail riding attempting to make the chassis trail worthy would require a lot of work including suspension upgrades.  This engine would be my engine of choice for a trail bike.  The 450 bikes just have too much power and weight for tight woods.  MX bikes have a nice chassis but too long a wheelbase for tight trails.  Two strokes are short on good low speed torque but I like their power delivery and light weight.  Mini bikes have the light weight but lack enough tractable power; but most important is that the ergonomics of the cockpit are terrible for an adult on a long ride.  So let’s get started."

Primary, Secondary, Tertiary: What’s Your Choice?

Story by GD Crocker for The Firearm Blog

For years, my friends and I have sent what must be thousands of emails to each other about a single issue: If you were going to be displaced or circumstances were altered to a degree that you would have to rely on only three weapons, which do you choose? Ultimately, the parameters of the conversation were constrained to choosing one rifle, one pistol and one shotgun.

Best places to glamp

By Emily H. Bratcher | U.S. News
Are you fond of the great outdoors … minus the mosquitoes, the dirt and the whole sleeping bag situation? If so, you might be more of a "glamper": You want to experience the majesty and tranquility of nature, but you don't want to forgo luxuries like a plush bed and privacy when nature calls. These eight glampsites — found everywhere from Montana to Australia — blend pristine natural beauty with luxurious accommodations ("glamping" combines "glamour" and "camp"). So leave your sleeping bag and your tent at home, and get ready not to rough it in the great outdoors. The photo above is from The Resort at Paws Up in Greenough, Montana and only one example from this story.
